The arts play a crucial role in providing students with diverse avenues for growth and building a foundation for future success.
At Ivy Hill Prep, we offer an exceptional range of electives, including Dance, Art, Martial Arts, and Theater, which are integral to our curriculum. Our students benefit from structured hands-on, project-based, and independent learning opportunities to hone their artistic skills. We aim to enrich our culturally responsive curriculum by exposing our scholars to a diverse range of cultural techniques and international styles, including the contributions of persons of African descent and other communities of color. What We Do
Visual Arts
Students delve into the study of a wide array of artists from diverse backgrounds and cultures, seamlessly integrating art history, critical thinking, and art theory into their own creative endeavors. This empowers them to craft original artwork while confidently experimenting with a variety of materials and techniques relevant to their acquired knowledge. Additionally, at the conclusion of each unit, students actively engage in the critique and discussion of their own work, as well as that of their peers, fostering a deep understanding of how art serves as a powerful visual language for expressing complex societal and cultural concepts. Furthermore, students are assured the opportunity to boldly showcase their work in gallery shows.
Dance
The dance program is committed to providing high-quality training rooted in the Diaspora's perspectives. It focuses on human movement and its evolution into social and codified forms. Our goal is to ensure that every participant masters fundamental techniques and is prepared for continued involvement in dance. Through well-structured activities, we aim to instill a lifelong appreciation for artistic disciplines by cultivating technique, practice habits, and performance etiquette with culturally relevant content.
Martial Arts
Our Martial Arts program for elementary students offers a comprehensive curriculum under the guidance of specialized instructors Mr. Sterling and Mr. Reyes. This program covers wrestling, Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, Judo, Boxing, and MMA. Students are instructed in the disciplines of Jiu Jitsu, Judo, and Muay Thai, fostering the development of discipline, respect, and self-confidence, while improving physical fitness and coordination. The culmination of the program is an annual showcase where students demonstrate their mastered skills. Theater
The program is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in theater. For students in grades K-2, we focus on the essential building blocks of theater, including voice and movement, puppetry, and storytelling. For students in grades 3-5, we delve into real-world theater, such as pantomime/voice, audition preparation, monologue and scene work, and musical theater/tech theater. We hold auditions every trimester and put on a spring musical/fall play performance, giving our students the opportunity to showcase skills and talents.
